MindManager v. 4.7

MindManager.or
“How to Electronically Mind Anything”
Are
you planning a party—a wedding, say? Are you the “scribe” for your
meeting—or just a regular attendant who needs to benefit from the
proceedings of this meeting? Are you a Medical Student, an Intern or
Resident making and documenting clinical rounds or preparing sign-out
sheets to hand over to a colleague? What if you are an Attorney working on
a case facing the challenge of keeping all your notes and
references—both human and literature—in one indelible, shareable
electronic format? Could the jury benefit from a visual summation?
Are
you are teacher looking for a dynamic and real-time electronic “inkboard”?
Are you tired of the constraints and sterility of PowerPoint slides,
unimpressed by the consolation of animations? Do you want to write a
manual of instructions or a recipe on one electronic page of document? Do
you have a project to plan? Are
you acting as a consultant trying to explain to your client visually how
you propose to deal with the task at hand?
Have
I missed anyone—anything? Oh
yes, if you do Pedigrees and Genealogy or any other kind of arboreal
representations. You don’t need to be an Astrophysicist to benefit from
MindManager (so, we suggest perhaps the MindManager folks can consider not
charging “stratospheric prices” for this albeit stellar product).
You
can accomplish anything of the sort above using MindManager. The TabletPC
version makes it possible to do all this with electronic pen and tablet
with the ease of using pen or pencil on paper. Yet, it can convert your
electronic handwriting entries into text; all this while enjoying the
mobility, portability, wireless and convenience benefits of the TabletPC.
How
many ways can you embellish your work (termed, “map”) in MindManager?
Colorize lines and text and sections. Add sketches—which means both your
own sketches and scrawling. Insert image files and symbols. Insert coded
icons or symbols. “Free-floating” text? Yes—and that’s separate
from the ability to pen real notes for your own needs to explain aspects
of your map. You can hyperlink to another file anywhere on your computer
or Network (the Enterprise version offers
network-type (even real-time) collaboration); or hyperlink to the
Internet. Of course, you can also “nest” maps—i.e., embed multiple
maps in one super-map.
MindManager
comes with templates for common tasks, but you can also design and save
your own templates just as easily. You can build reusable sprigs
(think of “live-twigs” complete with mini-branches and leaves) which
you can attach to branches and sub-branches in your current map. There is
even a Find-and-Replace function. Export-to and Import-from functions are
robust (with Word being the most common subject) , including Send to; you
can also do a pack-and-go—a la PowerPoint—but the recipient has to
download the free MindManager browser to view it (download URL provided).
Maps can be converted to PowerPoint for presentation, or saved as HTML for
viewing. But, you can also do your presentation right off MindManager.
So
why would I ask for more functions? Well, perfection is not a destination:
it is the journey of a nomad, an ongoing process. Why not give us a
“capillary” branching pattern where a branch grows into multiple
sub-branches which subsequently start coalescing into ultimately one
branch? By the same token, provide us with circular logic-type branch
structures (yielding triangular, diamond, and other polygonal
patterns—or even a true circle?)An
extension of this liberal “structuring” should lead to a true
“network pattern” where each object can have potentially multiple
linkages. (Can you see Corporate diagrams, IT schemes, etc.)?We have needs, you know!
Verdict:
In summary,
here we have a great tool which at once allows you to brainstorm, play and
doodle; and also formalize your ideas / thoughts into a logical plan,
which you can then store and or share live or on demand.

MindManger- Tablet PC Edition
Submitted:
Bernie 1 May.
The Tablet PC version of
MindManager
was officially
announced today. MindManager from Mindjet is one of the few
applications that are truly (re)written to take advantage of the
Tablet PC. I’ve been using it for a few days now, and I’m impressed
Mind Mapping is a
powerful technique that allows you to structure thoughts, meetings, in
a highly visual “map”. This map (see picture) features interconnected
key words, branches, color, and illustrations. The subject of the
“mind map” is represented in a central position, with the main themes
represented as “branches” from the center. From the branches there
are as many sub branches as needed to complete the mind map.
I’ve been using
mind mapping techniques and software for a few years now, mostly in my
consulting profession, as a way of conducting user requirement
sessions and to take meeting notes.
It features the
ability to create and edit a mind map using the Tablet’s pen. It has
special gestures that allow you to create branches, move them around,
zoom in and out of the map, and convert writing to text. You can even
drag in content and link to external content. Once a mind map is
created, it can be shared with other MindManager users, or exported to
Office (word, PowerPoint), MS Project, or HTML.
From my
perspective, this is an ideal complement for people who are in
meetings or anyone that brainstorms. As a tablet PC app, once you
learn the gestures, you can create, edit, and modify maps with your
pen making it a true tablet PC application. The product has an
introductory price of $151 making it expensive for those that don’t
use it on a regular basis, but for some reason, mind mapping software
has always been expensive. My main suggestion to Mindjet is to
create a “light” version with a lower retail for people who only
have occasional need to use the software.
